WELCOME TO CIRCLE CITY RAG RACERS' WEBSITE

The Circle City Rag Racers is a non-profit Club of enthusiasts that conduct sanctioned field trials and racing events for Sighthounds.  The club hosts approximately 8 amateur performance events each year under the sanctioning of various organizations.  These may include 1) Whippet Racing Association, 2) North American Whippet Racing Association, 3) National Oval Track Racing Association, 4) The International Silken Wind Hound Racing Association and 5) Large Gazehound Racing Association.  Links to these organizations are found on our link page.

All performance events are amateur in nature and award the dogs with Racing Championship points or National Point standings.  Small trophies are awarded to acknowledge the winning dogs however, wagering or profiting from these events is strictly prohibited by each of the sanctioning bodies.  The dogs will race on a specified track, course or field to the prescribed distance of the sanctionong body, typically 150 to 300 yards, either on a straight sprint course or oval track.  Dogs are on leash at all times other than during the actual race and are required to be muzzled during competition.

CCRR conducts most of these events on private property however some are held on public land.

Whippet Racing, Some Basics by Jerry Burrus

Circle City Rag Racers invites you to experience the sport of whippet racing at several organized meets each year in central Indiana.  I have enjoyed this game for nearly ten years and have traveled extensively around the country meeting many very fine racing competitors and their owners.

Let's look at a few basics elements of this sport.  Whippet racing is precisely what this  breed of dog was designed to do.  They are sprinters - some also refer to the Whippet as a coursing dog, but first and foremost they are racers.  Pedigrees may vary but you can be assured there is a racing dog behind your dog's gentle and friendly appearance.

CRR presently host two types of Whippet Racing.  Sprint racing or as some folks call it, flat track racing, and oval racing.  Both of these sports are open competition and are well defined within the body of rules the North American Whippet Racing Association (NAWRA) the Whippet Racing Association (WRA) and the National Oval Track Racing or NOTRA.  CCRR also offers Racing venues for the other sight hound breeds under LGRA and NOTRA.
